Hunger Task Force LFPA
Project of Hunger Task Force, Inc.
Hunger Task Force, Wisconsin's Anti-hunger Leader, utilized WI Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) funds to purchase fresh and minimally processed Wisconsin-produced foods from disadvantaged and underserved farmers. These foods were distributed to food pantries in 30 of Wisconsin's most food-insecure counties.
The project targeted low-income seniors, providing them with locally grown and processed foods free of charge, including 40,000 pounds of beef and pork, 3,800 pounds of salmon, and 18,000 pounds of produce. Socially disadvantaged farmers and food producers benefited by gaining guaranteed markets, training, and technical assistance, allowing for better planning and thriving in the supply chain.
PROJECT UPDATE 1
Hunger Task Force extended partnership to three additional local farmers. They provided facility tours, process overviews, and discussions on flexibility due to weather impacts. The organization purchased and inspected 6,000 lbs. of ground beef, 6,000 lbs. of pork chops, 1,678 lbs. of salmon, 225 lbs. of radishes, and 132 lbs. of sugar snap peas that they distributed to food pantries and organizations in 29 counties. The appreciation for fresh proteins among seniors receiving stock boxes was notable. There were weather-related delays in produce delivery. Consistency in communication with farmers has been beneficial. Hunger Task Force will continue protein distributions and begin purchasing and distributing a wider range of produce items from local farmers.
PROJECT UPDATE 2
Hunger Task Force successfully received and distributed proteins and fresh produce from LFPA vendors, delivering these items through stock boxes and to local food pantries. They inspected all incoming products and reported significant distributions, including over 5,000 lbs. of ground beef and pork chops, as well as more than 13,000 lbs. of fresh produce sourced from six local farms. Hunger Task Force maintained consistent communication with farmers to adapt to weather-related challenges affecting crop availability, ensuring that all agreed quantities were met. Moving forward, Hunger Task Force will continue distributing proteins through November, with plans to use remaining funds for additional protein purchases and to finalize fresh produce distributions based on previous survey results.
